Coach John Mateyko is the winningest coach in the history of the men’s program, posting ten double-digit winning seasons, two NCAA Tournament appearances and one Skyline Conference championship during his tenure.  His overall record is 190-129 (02-13) and he has won two Skyline Conference Coach of the Year awards (’07-’08 & ‘11-‘12).

Mateyko has guided the Golden Eagles to two NCAA Division III tournaments (once as conference champion and once as an at-large selection), several appearances in the NCAA’s Atlantic Region rankings and multiple selections to the ECAC Metro Tournament.

Coach posted five consecutive 20-win campaigns starting in the 2007-08 season through the end of the 2011-2012 season.

Since joining the NCAA in 1997, no coach at St. Joseph’s has had more seasons with ten or more victories than Mateyko.  Coach surpassed the legendary Frank Mulzoff (former St. John’s & St. Joseph’s coach) for the most double-digit winning seasons in program history (five) in 2007.

In 2007, the Golden Eagles won the MET New York College Basketball Officials Association Sportsmanship Award.

Before he was hired at SJC in 2001, Coach Mateyko spent four years on the staff at SUNY Maritime, including two seasons as associate head coach.  He received his first coaching experience at American International, his Alma mater, starting in 1984 as an assistant coach.  In that two-year span, he coached future NBA guard Mario Elie.  Mateyko later returned to coaching in 1992, when he became an assistant at St. Mary’s of Manhasset, one of New York’s top prep hoops programs.

During Mateyko’s on-court career he played at Archbishop Molloy High School under coaching legend Jack Curran.

John and his wife, Kathleen, currently reside in Long Beach with their son, John Richard.  Coach is a financial advisor in Uniondale.
